Parihaka - Tim Finn and The Herbs

What is the main message of this song?
To show how significant the effect of Parihaka had on the tribes and people involved and the meaning of this event.

What line explains their passive resistance method?

Te Whiti used the language of the spirit,

Then stood accused, the madman and his dream,

This shows that they used their voices and called the issue out instead of physically fighting for freedom.

what does 'you can't pull out the roots' refer to?
That Parihaka is rightfully theirs and would always be the native people's land. This also shows that they don't want to give up the land as they had it before the British came.

Give evidence of their determination?

My friend, my friend, you've taken this the wrong way,

Rise up, defend yourself, never give in,

Look to the sky, the spirit of Te Whiti,

The endless tide is murmuring his name.

This shows that the people of Parihaka are very determined to keep their land and to take action.

How does this song show the significance of Parihaka?
Because it shows that Parihaka affected heaps and that the people that were taken and sent to jail needed justice.

What makes an event Significant?
That heaps of the native people were taken and sent to jail and they had to fight back for the land that was rightfully theirs this was huge for things like equality and the treaty of Waitangi

How many people are affected?
thousands of people and thousands of people are still being affected because of the effects it has had over time.

How long were people affected?
hundreds of years from when the events happened until now.

To what extent are people affected?
This has hurt many people in many ways. This was bad as it still has people disliking the people who aren't from their land and arent native. People were abused, raped and even more, things were done to them.

  3. Nice blog Tobey,
I like how you added lyrics to show which verse you were talking about more clearly. But you could add a different video as mentioned before it is copyrighted and cannot be watched.
