Burger Competition

 My Burger:

Self Evaluation:

Pros: The Burger was very tasty and had heaps of flavor.

Cons: not enough tomatoes and colour.

Texture:

The texture was a soft burger with a little crunch from the searing of the burger patty. The bun was nice and soft. The toasting of the bun worked well with the other textures given off from the tomatoes and the lettuce. The cheese was nice and melted add more flavor to the overall burger.

Colour: The main color of the burger was golds and browns since the burger was all pan cooked. The only other colors were green from the lettuce and a little red from the tomatoes. If we added even a little more red the color would have been better.

Flavor: The flavor from the burger was nice and had nice and herby and salty flavors. It also had a nice kick from some spice we added in. The lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes added a nice flavor that worked with the burger. Our homemade sauce was nice and worked really well with our buns and patties.

Judges Comment: The judges said our burger needed more color and thicker tomatoes.

Evaluation sheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X08qfUhC6RBKQAernFL2SPKhZ9O981Sp/view?usp=sharing

Results: We didn't win the first-place prize we won the prize for the best use of flavor.

Music/poetry = Message

Music/poetry = message

Work:

Music and poetry are used to show many meanings and nowadays it can be the way people talk about many big issues. Here is a song/poem that has meaning to me.

One of my favorite songs is blessings by chance the rapper. In this song, he talks about how God has an impact on us and this is big in my culture. The way he does this may be seen as inappropriate and people don't like it but I like how he chooses a nice sound to go with his lyrics.

Sustainable Fishing

Is sustainable fishing possible?

Sustainable fishing seems like it should be fairly easy to be possible. On paper many people this is an easy task and people thinks is normal and what they do at sea. At sea, they don't care about rules and they get a heap of bycatch. This should be very hard to stop and manage since no one can always be out on the sea and even if they are many people who are on sea supervising this can be bribed so that they seem sustainable. Even the label dolphin-safe said that they can't guarantee that they sell products that are really dolphin-safe.

How is commercial fishing a threat to dolphins and birdlife (bycatch)?

Each year heaps of dolphins and birds are killed and in the last year 300000 whales, dolphins, and birdlife were killed by people who are fishing. The Fench coast alone had killed over 10000 dolphins. There was one tuna boat the killed 45 dolphins to get only 8 tuna. As a result of these terrible fishing practices, many animals in the sea are dying when humans are fishing for other animals that arent them. Humans are a huge threat to sea life and the ocean as we are the issue and we cause the issue.

Corrosion

Aim: To investigate the factors that cause rusting in iron and corrosion.

Equipment: 6 nails, 9 mls, saltwater 9mls of water plus oil on top, nail polish, calcium chloride, bung, aluminum wrap, test tubes x6.

Method:

1. put 6 iron nails in 6 different test tubes.

2. cover one nail with around 9mls water, Cover one with water and add oil layer on top, Cover one nail in nail polish, Cover one nail in saltwater, Put calcium chloride with a nail and cover with a bung, Wrap a nail in aluminum and put in a test tube.

3. Leave these test tubes aside for three or more days.

Results:

Discussion: The water made the nail rust fast but the saltwater rusted the most because the water speed up the time it took for. The one that rusted the least was the calcium chloride because it dries out the oxygen so there is no natural environment to cause the rusting in the metal nail. The Corrosion experiment shows what is quicker for the metal to corrode in.

Conclusion:

The metal in the most natural environment should rust the most because for metal to rust it needs things like water, salt, and oxygen. All three of this help speed up the time it takes to corrode. If you put metal in an unnatural environment the metal will take longer to corrode since it takes out the things the metal needs to corrode.

Reflection Blog (Resilience)

The Power of YET.

Resilience and growth mindset both work together hand in hand. These are used to tell people who fail that you can try again and the power of yet does this well. The power of yet is to change the mindset of people from I can't do it to I can't do it YET. A growth mindset is important for people because it shows that improvements can be made and if they don't know how to get to an end result and think that intelligence is fixed is exactly what a growth mindset and the power of yet is meant to change. As you can tell it sounds way better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset and that's because it is. Fixed mindsets are bad because you don't get as much brain growth and actually don't learn as much even if they were taught the same thing. Growth mindsets and the power of yet are very important for everyone to have.

What do freedom writers, John Minto, and resilience have in common?

Freedom writers and John Minto are both about fighting for freedom and equality. They are both fighting and trying to get what they think is right to others so they can survive. These both also show resilience as they have to keep on trying even when they are getting shut down by people like the police and everyday people who are against these ideas. People like them are great people are will go down in history for being impactful for our planet and people who live on it.

Pink Shirt Day:

Pink Shirt Day is a day to stop bullying and for people to stand up and against bullying. This is called pink shirt day because it encourages people to wear a pink shirt since in Canada two boys stood up for homophobic bully that was towards a year 10 student who wore a pink shirt. We support it in New Zealand too since it is important to stand up against bullying for the better of others. I think that this day is very important and that we should stop bullying.

Book: Memory

Author: Margaret Mahy

Ideas:

25/05 - believing stories = growth mindset/ resilience - grief [Dr. Lucy Hone]

Early in the novel, Mahy writes of Jonny, 'For Jonny, imaginary things, once properly imagined, could grow as powerful and lucid as if they were true. He had always been the victim of stories, not only other people's but his own as well (Chapter 1). What are some of these stories that Jonny is a victim of?

Jonny’s family and friends are always saying that he will be a failure or that he will end up living back at home. Jonny began drinking to get out of the fact that he believes the same as them and he is a shadow of his sister. His dad said that he will be back once Jonny left him and moved out because he didn't believe in Jonny. Although he hasn't become that great he still has shown resilience as he's proved them wrong and continues to fight the thoughts he has.

Shark Finning

What is Shark Finning? Shark Finning is when people are cutting off the fins of a shark. They are then selling these fins to China and Hong Kong. These places are then using millions of fins they gat and make shark fin soup from them which they then eat.

Why is it a delicacy? This is a very important part of the Chinese culture as this is used to show who is better than the rest. This is used as a social status but also used at special events such as weeding Chinese New Year and Birthdays. This dish is also very expensive costing upwards of 100 US dollars.

How is this impacting our oceans/why are sharks so important? Sharks are very important for our ocean and this is affecting the food chain since there will be an overpopulation of fish which will then run out of food leaving us with more issues and problems for us on land and humans.

these people are also trying to keep cameras away since this isn't right and they know that.

Starfish Poem

Starfish Poem

(Click the blue words to see the poem)

Whats is the main message of this poem:

The main message of this poem is that even if you do a little it can still impact and have an impact on the world. The poem is between the two people and it is about one person trying to save starfish but they couldn't save all on them just a few starfish.

This can be proved by these few lines in the poem:

You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely.

Then bent down, picked up another starfish

and threw it into the sea,

past the breaking waves and said-

"It made a difference for that one."

This proves that although he couldn't save all of them he could still have an impact. So a little might be all you can do but it may still help out.

Great pacific Garbage Patch Facts slide

 Hi Guys

Recently in class, we have been looking at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and have been finding heaps of different information about this:

Here is my work and this shows and teaches you about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and how important and serious this issue is.

BYE!

Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Great Pacific Garbage Patch

What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch you ask? The Great Pacific Garbage Patch or GPGP is a huge rubbish and litter gyre in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This rubbish gyre is actually the biggest in the world out of the five main rubbish patches.

This rubbish patch may never get reversed because it's too big and we can't burn the rubbish because that would cause other issues like air pollution which would be just as bad or even worse. We would never get on top of this issue especially since we still use so much plastic everyday. Imagine if you went to the supermarket and there was no plastic then everything would be different because the packaging of your food items would need to change and that's only a little bit of plastic we use.

The Great Pacific Garbage patch is causing the ocean serious harm. The garbage patch currently has heaps of the rubbish we throw out. Sadly the rate that we are going the ocean won't be able to handle it and our fish and sea animals will all die. When we throw out our rubbish, heaps of it will get into the sea and this is kill one hundred thousand sea life each year which is a lot. People need to stop littering and we need to try to get on top of this plastic issue as it may end up causing humans serious harm in no time at all.

What causes these issues? These issues are caused by the use of plastic that people use. This could be from things like Nurdles which humans use to make plastic. These plastics are thrown out and are accumulated in things like the dump. This rubbish is then thrown out and dumped either in a big hole or thrown into the sea.

There are many causes and effects of rubbish in the ocean especially in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This is important because this rubbish is killing sea life and the animals in the sea. This is also ruining our planet since the sea soon won't be able to handle our pollution. Humans use so much plastic and that produces more rubbish which gets dug into the land or dumped into the ocean. We now have heaps of people that litter and rubbish is now getting into waterways and is getting taken into the sea from these waterways.

What are the effects? The effects are that the rubbish in the ocean is getting caught into gyres like the north pacific gyre. This is causing the ocean to be full of pollutants and its slowing running the ocean and our world. Sea life is dieing from this as they eat the plastics and struggle to survive as they aren't hungry so they don't get enough nutrients.

The ocean is now filled with the most rubbish ever and the use of plastic is still very high as our supermarkets, and shops still use heaps of plastic as packaging is mainly plastic as they have a hard time finding an alternative as plastic is so easy for them to get hold of and make.

In conclusion the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a very bad place for the environment and things like sea life and maybe in the future even humans. This is a huge problem so we need to use less plastic then slowly get rid of plastic because it could be the end of our planet.

  1. Plankton: Plankton is a large collection of organism found in both the water and air

  2. Plastic Particles: Fragments of plastic that are smaller than five millimeters these are turned into microplastics

  3. Plastic Soup: Pollution in the ocean caused by plastic

  4. Fragment: Fragments are pieces of plastic that have broken down into small pieces of plastic

  5. Pacific ocean: This is the largest and deepest ocean it extended from the arctic ocean and the southern ocean.

  6. North Pacific Gyres: This is a current that wraps in a circle trapping things that are floating around inside it, this is the biggest in the world, this is home to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

  7. Pollutants: This is rubbish, plastic, particles or substances that pollutant the water or air.

  8. Plastic Resin Pellets (‘Nurdles’): A small plastic pellet which serves as raw material in the manufacturing of plastic products

  9. Accumulate: A gather or build up of plastic

  10. Synthetic: Fibre made in factors that are man made

  11. Petroleum: It is a fossil fuel made from dead organism

  12. Ingested: Swallowing or absorbing a substance.

  13. Environmental catastrophe:

Hydrogen pop test

Aim: To show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.

Equipment: A test tube, a boiling tube, Busen Burner, wooden splint, a bottle of acid, a piece of metal, safety glasses.

Method:

1. Light your bunsen burner

2. Add a sample of metal to your test tube. Add 3 mls of acid

3. Carefully add the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.

4. Hold the test tubes together for a few minutes, allowing time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with gas

5. When you think the tube is full, your lab partner should light a wooden splint.

6. Carefully but quickly tilt the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.

Discussion: The flame with the hydrogen gas made the gas explode into a loud pop followed by smoke. When we have collected the hydrogen gas the metal and the acid heated up and the acid started to boil producing the hydrogen gas.

Conclusion: This proved that hydrogen gas is produced from metal reacting with acid as the hydrogen when met with fire make a loud pop. This shows us that we got hydrogen gas from burning the metal in the acid.

HART

Hi Guys!
Today in class we learned about HART to prep for when John Minto comes in on Friday to talk to us and our class.
HART by Tobey Geldard

What and why are we learning about? We are learning about HART and the impact that they had on racism from their protests against apartheid.
How did we learn it? We learned this via our own research and our ability to find information.
What questions do I have? What was the hardest part of this protest and the protest group?
