Evaporation Experiment

Aim: To separate a mixture using evaporation.

Hypothesis: I think that the copper sulfate will stay into the beacon while the water will evaporate out of the mixture. The heat will make most of the liquid leave and the color of the mixture will get darker and will be a dark blue. What will happen is that the solute will separate from the liquid solution and solvent.

Equipment: Copper sulfate solution, 250ml, heat proof mat, evaporating basin, element.

Method:

1. Set up element

2. Add 100ml of hot water to the beaker and place on the element.

3. Add copper sulfate to the evaporating basin until it is quarter full.

4. Carefully, place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker.

5. Turn on the element to 3.

6. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated and crystals of solute are forming.

7. Turn off the element - careful not to touch as will be hot for a long time.

Observations: What I saw first is that the water starts to boil the solution starts to steam. The solution starts to separate and the mixture is evaporating. The mixture now becomes crystals.

Conclusion: My hypthesis was correct but their was crystals that occurred after the liquid was evaporated.

Discussion: The water separated and the copper sulfate is now crystals. The heat separated to the mixture and the water is now being left behind from the water boiling and evaporating the solute is staying and the solvent is separating and the solution is now just the solute.

Evaluation: The experiment was interesting as it was cool to see how the solution starts to separate and how the crystals where left from the copper sulfate.
