Carbon Footprint Pledge

My Carbon Footprint

Carbon Footprint explained ( Youtube)

Carbon Footprint handout

Here is my Carbon Footprint:

You will need:
  1. 2 different coloring pencils
  2. The Carbon Footprint Handout.
We will look at our Carbon Footprint under the following headings.

  • Dwelling
  • Water
  • Recreation
  • Heating and cooling
  • Electricity
  • Transportation
  • Food
  • Waste
  • Air Travel
  • Consumption

Colour 1: for actions, they are already doing
Colour 2: for actions that they pledge to undertake in the future

List 5 of the actions you pledge to undertake in the future.

  1.   Check to see my food is produced locally.
  2.   Try to conserve as much water as I can.
  3.   Mainly buy for my needs.
  4.   Recycle as much as I can.
  5.   Walk around places more.

Hurumanu: Climate Change and the future

Aim; To look at the different ways we can prevent climate change in the future.

What places will be affected? New Zealand and where water is already flooding from the sea
coastal area.

What else do we need to think about? Pacific islands and where the islands are lower buildings and where we will but them.

What other places around NZ will be affected?
Pacific island coastal areas.
Places that are relying on water from the tide.

What does this do to our drinking water?
Add more saltwater to our freshwater.

What are the main concerns?
  1. Drinking water.
  2. Floodings.

What can we do?
  1.  Think of ways to use fewer fossil fuels
  2.    When you build a house make sure it is energy efficient
  3.     like public transport or electric cars or walk or bike places

What is the one, silver bullet solution? There is no silver bullet

What is the mix of things we need to start doing?
  1. Use renewable energy
  2.   Use solar heating
  3. Use electric vehicals
What are 3 others you can think of?
  1.   Use solar power for your houses.
  2. use less fossil fuels
  3.   Walk more or use public trasport

  1. Transportation
  2. Community
  3. Consumption
  4. Water
  5. Food

    Hurumanu Solar Oven

Aim: To make a solar-powered oven.

    Materials:

    1. Pizza box
    2.   tin foil
    3.   scissors
    4.   tape
    5.   ruler
    6.   pencil
    7.   glad wrap
    8. newspaper
    Steps:
    1.   get the pizza box and everything you will need for this experiment.
    2.   cut a rectangular shape on the lid of the box.
    3.   tap tinfoil onto the inside of the rectangle.
    4.   put black plastic on the inside of the box.
    5. put the glad wrap on the top of the box (inside the box)
    6.   scrunch up newspaper to go around the inside of the box.
    7. put things you want to cook and wait

    Conclusion:
They took a long time to melt and even then it didn't melt enough to make a smore.

    Hurumanu (Renewable Energy Investigation)

Aim: To make a presentation that investigates different renewable energy's.

    Section 1: Title Page

    Section 2: Definitions
    1. Hydro Energy
Hydro energy is when water is used to create energy using a water turbine.
    Image result for hydro energy

         2. Solar Energy

Solar energy is when we collect energy from the light of the sun using a solar panel.
    Image result for solar energy
         3.Wind Energy
Wind energy is when you collect energy from the power of the wind force using a wind turbine.
    Image result for wind energy

    4.Wave Energy
    Image result for wave energy
Wave energy is when you get energy from the waves and their speed and force they turn the waves into energy using a wave encounter machine.

Section 3; Investigate each of the 4 Energy types.
( Hydro ,Solar ,Wind ,Wave )
    1. Type: Hydro
    2. Is it used in NZ? Yes. Large turbines have been build in the central plateau region in the north island.
    3. Other Countries that use it? Brazil, Canada, Norway, Paraguay, Austria, Switzerland, Venezuela, and many other countries.
    4. How is it used to generate electricity? It is used to generate electricity when you put a hydro turbine in places like rivers that have a water stream.
    5. Draw and label a diagram of the main parts of the electricity generator?

    1. Type: Solar
    2. Is it used in NZ? Yes. They have them all over New Zealand in places like Christchurch and maybe even around your town/city.
    3. Other Countries that use it? Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, The United States, and Czechia.
    4. How is it used to generate electricity? when the sunlight hits a solar panel the solar panel will absorb the sun's light and will produce energy.
    5. Draw and label a diagram of the main parts of the electricity generator?

    1. Type: Wind
    2. Is it used in NZ? Yes. There are some wind farms in places like the cook straight and Manawatu Gorge.
    3. Other Countries that use it? China, The United States, Germany, India, Spain, United Kindom, and France.
    4. How is it used to generate electricity? When the wind pushes the huge wind turbine energy is made because of the wind's force.
    5. Draw and label a diagram of the main parts of the electricity generator?

    1. Type: Wave
    2. Is it used in NZ? No.
    3. Other Countries that use it? Scotland, Canada, Australia, and The United States.
    4. How is it used to generate electricity? When waves hit wave energy generator the power from the waves hitting it creates some power and energy.
    5. Draw and label a diagram of the main parts of the electricity generator?

Section 4: Renewable Energy in the future.

List at 10 ways that renewable energy will be used in the future to replace our current activities.
    1. To power cars
    2. To give energy to houses
    3. To fuel vehicles like planes and etc.
    4. For cooking devices
    5. Computers eg. chargers
    6. phones eg. chargers
    7. factories
    8. printers
    9. camera's
    10. vacuum cleaners and electronics

    Hurumanu (Wind Power)

    Measuring weather.

    Definitions:

    1. Anemometer:
    2. Beaufort wind scale:

    Anemometer

    MATERIALS

    1. PLastic lid x4
    2. tape
    3. pencil
    4. pin
    5. skewers x2

    STEPS

    1. Get all the materials you need.
    2. Tape plastic lids to the skewers. (two on each skewer.)
    3.   Tape the two skewers together.
    4.   Pin the skewers to the pencil.
    5.   Test to make sure it spins.
    6.  Go to winding spaces to see the wind speed.

    Group Investigation.

    Groups size: 5
    Roles:

    • Timekeeper ( watch)
    • Counter
    • Recorder ( Chromebook or refill )
    • Anemometer Manager ( Anemometer)
    • Wind Manager

    Instructions:
    • Go to the measuring place and set up your wind gauge.
    • Make sure everyone in your group is ready to start their roles.
    • Record how many times it spins and record it in the table below.
    • Count the number of spins in 15 seconds.
    • Record it on your chart.

    FINDINGS

Place name on school grounds                                    Number of Spins in 15 seconds
    1.Field0.5
    2.Old J Block site1
    3.Grass hill in the quad1
    4.Tennis Court gate0

    CONCLUSION:

There was much wind where we went today so the number of spins would be a low amount.
The places that had the most wind were the grass hill in the quad and the old J block site.
The field was the second most windest place in the school because it spun half the way around.
The Tennis Court was not windy at all and it spun 0 times.
