Atmosphere - feel, energy around.
Mood - how you feel, emotions
Location - where something is happening.

Lighting:
natural light- produced in nature, often sun, moon, stars, lightning.
artificial- Man-made light, usually electrical.
Warm - Yellow, makes you feel safe, warm.
Cold - White/Blue tone, Makes feel clean, clinical.
Bright - Fills room, makes feel happy, safe.
Dull - Fills part of a space only, often creepy/murky.

Whats happening - Coraline and her parents having breakfast in the real kitchen - They look depressed, dull, lifeless.
Technique:
- lighting - cold - natural - from cloudy window - dull
- Colours - cold, washed out, faded, muted. - Off white, creams and yellows.

Effect on viewer (feel/think) - boring, don't want to be there. - boring, dull, lifeless.

Directors purpose (theme) - Set the that real world is boring and empty - makes the other world more appealing. - Looks can be deceiving - is not actually bad place to be.

Other techniques (costumes/shots/music/setting) - Costume - real parents in simple plain colours and fabrics in dull colours.
