Bright - Fills room, makes feel happy, safe.
Dull - Fills part of a space only, often creepy/murky.

- Colours - cold, washed out, faded, muted. - Off white, creams and yellows.

Directors purpose (theme) - Set the that real world is boring and empty - makes the other world more appealing. - Looks can be deceiving - is not actually bad place to be.
Other techniques (costumes/shots/music/setting) - Costume - real parents in simple plain colours and fabrics in dull colours.

Directors purpose - looks can be deceiving - looks nice but in reality it is unsafe. Make Coraline feel comfortable - huge improvement on real world.
Other technique - costume - colourful, friendly looking, lots of black/red - more fashionable, comfy, warm.
